New album, “Descending Reprisal”, out on October 9th!
Formed in Brazil in December 2024, CARCERAL is an instrumental extreme metal band blending the aggressive riff language of death and thrash metal with the brevity and relentless pacing of grindcore.
Released digitally in July 2026 and now also available on CD via I, Voidhanger Records, their debut album, Descending Reprisal presents a fully instrumental approach to extreme music. Rather than relying on vocals, the band uses guitars, bass and drums to drive the narrative, creating compositions that emphasize atmosphere, tension and dynamic storytelling.
CARCERAL’s short but explosive compositions are like mad shards of paroxysmal metal violence that take the form of devastating riffs, whirling guitar solos (which don’t disdain sophisticated jazz-prog incursions), and powerful, virtuoso rhythmic concatenations. They demand total abandon from the listeners, allowing them to be overwhelmed by the ecstasy of metal, where superb technique and expressiveness blend harmoniously. The listening experience is liberating; it exposes us to the astonishing beauty of music and the essence of metal art in its purest form, free from the constraints of song structure.
“Although the music draws inspiration from bands like DEATH, MORBID ANGEL and DARK ANGEL, I also wanted to capture the unsettling, dissonant atmosphere of VOIVOD and IMMOLATION,” says Roberto Ortega, project founder and one of CARCERAL’s extraordinary guitarists; “The goal was never to recreate those sounds, but to combine the expressive freedom of instrumental music with the darkness and intensity of extreme metal.”
Conceptually, Descending Reprisal revolves around the idea of punishment in an apocalyptic setting, reflecting on the systems of power, privilege and injustice created by humanity, and each composition is meant to feel like another stage in that collapse. By combining such themes with a uniquely subversive stylistic approach, absolute technical mastery and a top notch production, CARCERAL offer a listening experience that’s both familiar and entirely new.
