With VERMIN, ABYSSIUS return with their most confrontational and uncompromising work to date. Entirely self-produced and shaped without external mediation, VERMIN pushes the band’s technical and atmospheric death metal foundation into heavier, more intricate territory, while turning its gaze inward, toward self-hatred, exhaustion, and the quiet violence of existing with oneself.
Following their earlier explorations of nihilism and the void, VERMIN narrows its focus. The album is less concerned with abstract negation and more invested in personal collapse: cyclical self-loathing, internalized disgust, and the uneasy awareness that meaninglessness does not absolve responsibility. The result is an album that is oppressive without being theatrical, bleak without posturing, and occasionally sharp enough to acknowledge its own absurdity.
Musically, VERMIN marks a clear escalation. Riffing is denser and more angular, rhythmic structures more demanding, and compositions more deliberate in their weight. Technicality is employed not as ornamentation, but as pressure. Songs contort and grind forward with a sense of inevitability, balancing suffocating heaviness against moments of cold atmosphere and grim clarity. While the album is more severe than its predecessors, it is also more confident, unafraid to linger or to let tension rot rather than resolve.
The lead singles “Black Dogs” and “Corpse Star” introduce VERMIN’s tonal shift: sharper, more hostile, and more personal. Together they set the stage for an album that rejects redemption narratives and catharsis in favor of endurance. This creates ABYSSIUS’ unflinching document of internal decay, delivered with precision and intent.
